1. Resign the Right Way
You’re leaving your former position, but be careful to leave a positive impression behind you when you go. Make sure to resign formally so you maintain good references and positive connections for the future. A formal letter of recommendation to human resources and your director supervisor is the standard for most industries. And be sure to keep the contact information of anyone you may wish to connect with down the road.
2. Complete Your Human Resources Documentation
At most new jobs, getting hired is just the beginning of getting processed through human resources. At most places of employment, you’ll need to submit the correct documentation for tax purposes and payroll including a copy of your bank information for direct deposit payments. But even if you’ve been hired through a contracting recruitment agency that handles your pay, you’ll most likely need to complete some basic training and testing. Find out how long the onboarding process takes as soon as possible so you’ll know what to expect.
3. Get Ready to Be a Rookie
If you managed to rack up some seniority at your previous place of employment, you may find it jarring to be a rookie again if you’re not prepared for it. But if you go into your new place of employment excited about the opportunity to learn some new skills, you’ll have a more enjoyable and fruitful job experience. You’ll also build a reputation for being a good employee.
4. Maintain Open Communication
Be sure to stay in contact with your hiring manager and direct supervisor throughout the hiring process. That way, if any questions should arise, they won’t have trouble contacting you. At the same time, don’t hesitate to ask any questions that come up on your end. And don’t forget to start checking your new email as soon as it is assigned.
5. Update Your Resume and Online Profiles
As soon as you’ve accepted a new position, it’s a good idea to take some time and update our curriculum vitae or resume to reflect the change in position and place it on file with your new employer. Additionally, you’ll want to make sure your Linkedin and other online profiles reflect your change in position and work email.
